ELPA statement on NBA/FIBA announcement to explore new basketball league in Europe

Apr 9, 2025 | Home News, Media, News

European basketball has grown tremendously over the past decade. Like never before, European players are leaving their mark on the NBA. Vice versa, American players have become icons of Europe’s top basketball competition, the EuroLeague, which in itself has become a global reference in basketball. Known for its fierce competitiveness and unparalleled in-arena atmosphere, the EuroLeague continues to generate growing interest among sports fans worldwide.

The players of EuroLeague are proud of the competition that they play in. Through the EuroLeague Players Association (ELPA) founded seven years ago, they have been able to directly influence the working conditions in EuroLeague through the first pan-European collective agreement in any sport, which has elevated league’s standards and has contributed to an even bigger spectacle on the court.

Despite significant progress, it must be acknowledged that there is still much work to be done to unravel the true potential of European club basketball. That potential is lost when the relevant leagues, clubs and governing bodies do not work harmoniously, but seemingly against each other, without consideration for the perspective of players and fans who are the lifeblood of any competition.

ELPA recognizes and respects the significant contributions of the NBA and FIBA to the growth and global recognition of basketball. In fact, the NBA remains the beacon of inspiration for basketball players worldwide, who also aspire to play for their national teams in FIBA competitions.

Following recent announcements on potential creation of a new European basketball league, it is clear that instead of fragmenting European club basketball, only united efforts by all will help continue the growth of the game in Europe. In a call for unity, ELPA petitions all stakeholders to join forces in contributing to the development of European basketball. Let us work together to protect what makes the European game so special – its tradition, passion and competitiveness. Most importantly, our shared focus must be on our loyal fans, and we must not allow fragmentation and confusion to disrupt the fan experience.

Looking ahead, ELPA remains committed to work collaboratively to secure a thriving future for European club basketball. Unlocking the true potential of the game in Europe cannot be achieved without collaboration of all major stakeholders, including the EuroLeague and its players.
